At UCSC we have that student policy as well, but if you talk to a teacher
he/she can ask to have the chairman of the department sign a waiver. I
wonder if the same can be done at Cal. I would suggest contacting the
instructor. It probably depends on how many students he/she already has, but
it's worth a try! (I am asking to have that done at UCSC this coming quarter
and my chairman gave it a thumbs up as long as my load isn't full already.)
