I live in the "Bay Area" and there are many opportunities to play, although
the serious professional stuff is pretty well covered. The better
professional orchestras in the area have developed to the point where each
needs its own players. There was a time when a small cadre of musicians
could play all of the "Freeway Philharmonic" but that milieu has grown to
the point where it would be really exhausting.
Which school are you considering? If on the peninsula, one of my Curtis
bassoon classmates is there and could be a valuable resource for you. There
are many fine teachers in San Francisco.
