I find it actually relieving to have comments every once in a while from
members of this list. It indicates that
not all heads are stuck in the sand. War is apparently imminent. People
are going to die. A very large portion of the world community isn't
convinced that this particular war is necessary, including the
overwhelming majority of British people (despite the war yells of their
*elected* leader - a discussion of what actually constitutes being
elected 8in the USA) probably REALLY doesn't belong here)...
Let's build a bridge: Yesterday I was at the Frankfurt Music Fair and
got to play about 50 different oboes. (The absolute best oboe was one
from the small Japanese company 'Josef' but there were quite a few
fantastic instruments.
Some impressions:
-I heard languages from all over the world.
-alot of People were smiling
-People were a little (alot?) worried about the world economic
situation.
-People were happy to talk in detail about their wares.
-I finally got to give a message of regard to Livio Varcol from my
revered teacher Henry Schuman that was a couple of years over due. (Herr
Varcol is Solo oboist of the Frankfurt Radio Orchestra)
-Depending on who I ran into, there didn't seem to be any conflict about
switching subjects during conversations from music to instruments to
imminent war to economic crises to whatever.
These fairs are often extremely tiring because of the incredible amounts
of stimulation and noise. Nevertheless the main feeling I had was that
of a child in a candy store and not enough money in his pockets to buy
everything he wanted...but he was allowed to taste a little of
everything-- heaven.
Back to the world crisis: Two points: I am NOT giving my opinion here
about the world situation though I DO have one. Just One recent quote by
Paul Spiegel, chairman of the Jewish Central Committee in Germany, that
should try to illuminate two sides of the coin from :
'Auschwitz was not liberated by protestors....but by the Red Army'.
My point(s) It wasn't America that did it alone but with the help of its
allies, however tenuous the relationship. And it wasn't possible to
liberate the concentration camps simply by protesting. War was necessary
(but not to forget who actually started the war)
What does this have to do with double reeds...nothing....and everything.
I'll stop.
