I had a cat (sadly, now deceased) that didn't like *any* instrument played
alone but always came into the room for quintet rehearsals & assumed his pl
ace in the bassoon case (always politely left open by the bassoonist--I gue
ss he didn't mind having to vacuum his case), where he waited patiently for
his favorite part -- chasing the flute player's silk cloth which, after in
serting it in his cleaning rod, he twirled up & down and 'round about. The
cat jumped, leaped & twirled in mid air, sometimes to music, making his an
tics look ballet-like. Until the cat's death, this is how we ended every r
ehearsal. Now we have just cookies & coffee.

OK, I'll add my $.02 worth. I have a dog bed in my music room. My labr
ador, Moose, will use the bed if I'm practicing bassoon- but if I'm playing
contra he comes over and lays against my feet/legs. Now my new addition
, an 8 month old St. Bernard- just leaves the room with either instrument.
Hmmm... maybe she's got better taste? : )
