One of the occasional drawbacks is that some people either forget or don't
realize you also play bassoon. I subbed a couple of months ago in a regional
orchestra (on contra), and the personnel manager put out a call for anyone
available to play some kiddie concerts to let her know. I called her and
told her I was available if she needed another bassoonist, and the first
words she said was "You play bassoon too?". I've also run into people who
seeing me for the first time with a bassoon are amazed that I play it too.
