Having had some hand problems in the past, I've found
that stretching out before practicing and reedmaking,
and stretching out afterwards really helps (just as if
you were going to go for a jog).

I also found relief in a moderate and occasional
amount of physical exercise (non-contact sports, of
course) - especially yoga because it emphasizes
stretching. I've found that the more "in shape" (and
with me I am using that term very lightly) I am, the
less tension I keep in my back, neck, arms and hands.
If you think about it, you're sitting in one place for
extended periods of time which is really bad for you.

As a rule of thumb (no pun intended) if it hurts, it
can't be good for you. If you begin to develop
problems, definitely address those problems
immediately rather than wait until they get out of
hand (no pun intended).
