Subj: [DR-L] Playing both oboe and bassoon
Date: Fri, 7 Feb 2003 21:32:47 -0500

I've just been asked if I would like to play bassoon in a Community
Orchestra. The Orchestra owns a Bassoon and would lend it to me if I
take lessons and play with the orchestra when I reach a competent level.
I have the time to practise, so time wouldn't be a problem.

I am very excited by this offer. I took up the oboe in September 2002
and I love it, but if I had been able to afford a bassoon I would have
chosen that instead.

I am visiting a bassoon player next week who will be able to give me
advice and hands-on with a bassoon, but in the meantime I'm wondering if
anyone on the list who plays both oboe and bassoon (or just bassoon)
who could answer some questions for me please?

Would the difference in reeds and embrouchure between oboe and bassoon
be a great obstacle for a newbie to doublereeds?

I have a right hand/wrist injury - overuse. My right hand cannot cope
with either treble or bass recorder. The oboe causes no problems.

Is there a stretch for the right hand on the bassoon? Is this stretch
in use only for certain notes or does it have to be used all the time?
And does your wrist and hand need to be held in an unnatural position
(ie bent) when playing bassoon?

Hoping for some kind advice please

Cheers

Karen
