Most replies to this topic have assumed that anyone that can't see the
attachments must be a computer doofus with stone-age software.

In reality, those of use that receive the digest receive the attachments as
code imbedded in the text of the digest in a form that, while not
impossible to decode, takes far more effort than looking at ANY picture is
worth. It is NOT our mail client at fault, it is how the doublereed list
handles the digest.

Furthermore, I have interests other than double reeds, many of them in
fact, and if I were to receive individual emails from all of the lists I am
on, I would be seriously inconvenienced by the time needed to deal with
them. By using the digest form, I can quickly look at the table of
contents and check out only the messages I am interested in.

So it does no good to tell me my email client is antiquated, and it will do
no good to tell me to receive the list in other than digest form.

Other email lists DO routinely strip attachments, not so much for the
convenience of the readers, but because the single largest source of virus
attacks on individual PCs is through email attachments. I know we have
been down the road of "why can't attachments be stripped?" before, the
answer being that the doublereed list software can't do this. So in
actuality it is not the antiquated software of the users of the list that
can't deal with attachments, it is the mailing software used by doublereed
itself.
