I'm not a doctor, but having played and taught the oboe for more than 30
years, I would guess that you could cause permanent damage, for
instance, if you are constantly sitting in a position that twists your
spine and puts pressure on spinal nerves, especially if you compound
that with a heavy backpack carried on one side. (I'm thinking English
horn here, in particular.)
Most damage (tendinitis) can probably be corrected, although I do know
of one case where someone spent ssoooo much time on reedmaking that she
suffered permanent damage in her right hand.
Bodies are very resilient, and usually one feels pain as a first
indicator to change something. If you ignore pain, you can do damage,
but most human beings don't go that far.
So get up and take a walk.
