This is a worthwhile concern. My guess is that knives and screwdrivers
could be used will ill intent in the cabin but not in the checked bags. I
believe that the concern with checked bags concerns bombs. Over the
holiday, I heard that travelers shouldn't pack cheese. That big block in
the x-ray would invite a manual check. It's worth getting a specific
opinion from an air carrier regarding items that look sharp through an
x-ray. Carrier Websites might have an FAQ sheet about packed bags and a
place to ask a specific question.

Subject: [DR-L] Airport Security issues...new thread

Hi all,
Just a question that is formulating in my mind as I'm following this airport
security thread closely. Unless I am misunderstanding, I have heard of a
couple list members mention that their under-plane (checked) luggage had
been searched in addition to being searched at the x-ray security checks for
cabin carry-ons, which since Jan 1st is possible. Does this mean that items
we pack in checked luggage (ie. knives, screwdrivers, etc..) can be searched
and possibly confiscated now? -- again, I am making reference specifically
to checked/under cabin baggage...?

Happy reeds,
Shawn
