My daughter played a fairly simple violin piece by memory at
age 12 with an adult chamber orchestra. During the rehearsals, she
kept getting tangled up in the fast section. The concertmaster (her
teacher) told her that he would play her melody if she stopped, and
she should jump back in whenever she could. They practiced it that
way with the orchestra, and it sounded fine with the melody trading
back and forth between the two. During the concert she blanked out at
a different part, he took over without missing a beat, and she came
back in a line later to finish properly. The glitch wouldn't even
have been noticeable to someone unfamiliar with the piece, except
that she has a very expressive face and looked absolutely stricken.
When she eventually applies to college, I expect to see this
experience reappearing in the essays about having to overcome
something.
