That's terrible for that student.
I recently have the joy of going to my nephew's piano recital. He's 6.
There were about 20 performers from the ages of 3 to 18 years old. The young
ones performed from the music, then as the skill was more advanced the music
was memorized. And yes, there were some that forgot their piece.
The teacher handled it in different ways for each student with the problem.
One student got up and got their music and began again. Another student sat
there being prompted by the teacher in a very positive. "Johnny, you remember
that part", and as she humm the tune the student recovers to play nicely.
And with another performer, the teacher quickly got the music for him, and it
was a somewhat complex piece.
The most interesting part of the recital for me was the seemly lack of rhythm
as if it hadn't be taught to the younger ones. My sister had asked the this,
and the teacher didn't teach metronome rhythm until later. What's the
general thought on this? And at what point does a student get instruction on
their rhythmic abilities?
Thank you
Cathy G
