My guess is that they're referring to multiphonic fingerings. They tend
to vary from bassoon to bassoon, but you can start by fingering low Bb
and lifting a random finger to get an idea of the possibilities. Try
low Bb while lifting either middle finger (L2 or R2). Some of the
multiphonics may not sound on your horn, and some will just take
practice. Many can be adjusted quite a bit with the embouchure.

I have a tape of the Boulder Bassoon Band from over ten
years ago on which they talk about "the bassoon's ability to play
chords." Do any of you bassoon gurus know how to finger that kind of
stuff? Maybe it just takes some fiddling for a few hours trying every
possible combination of keys.....
