I had the same problem and my teacher told me the best thing I could do was
have a spike fitted (against her inclinations because she doesn't like spi
kes).
This was difficult because I lived in South Africa at the time and the near
est place I could get a spike fitted was London.
It took me about 18 months, and a plane trip, and about a hundred emails, a
nd quite a lot of money, but I eventually did it and my teacher was entirel
y right. And Howarths in London did a beautiful job. They take the butt cap
and solder a socket to it with a thumbwheel to tighten the spike, much lik
e the way a music stand works. If you've ever seen a cello close up you'll
know exactly how it goes. Then they resilver the butt cap.
This is not to say that is the right solution for you. Bassoons are all muc
h the same shape, size and weight. Bassoon players are not. That is the pro
blem. The nice thing about a knee rest is you can try it and give it back i
f it doesn't work. Spikes are a bit more permanent, but maybe you know a pl
ayer who has one.

Subject: [Doublereed-l] Bassoon straps and other holding devices
Hey everyone~
As a 4th year bassoonist, I've already dealt with some tendonitis problem
s in my left wrist. A college student I know recommends one of those metal
leg bassoon holder things. Do any of you have experience with them? What do
you think?
Thanks,
~Darcy
