I just haven't had the ambition to make Michael's silk 'feather', but may give it a try.
I wonder if a bit of sponge over the end of the spoke (but under the silk) would be good protection. It may make it too thick to
pull through, though.

I like the idea of a covered weight, but think the plastic covered ones could easily get stuck crosswise in the bore. I made a silk
covered one, once, but it was tricky.

I was warned by a repair man that one should never use cotton swabs, as they are rougher and will cause more wear to the bore.

I have a silk one, and usually pull it through slowly, esp. the top joint, to lessen the friction and for better absorption.
