Hi Larry,
You have several excellent choices for bassoons these days. My personal
choice would be the Fox 601. As a player and as a bassoon repair tech I feel
it is the best bassoon on the market today. There was a time that one needed
to own a Heckel in order to be competitive in the bassoon world, but that is
no longer true. Several bassoonists in major symphony orchestras have
switched to the 601 and I know of two that won their jobs playing Fox
bassoons at their auditions, so the old "Well, you need a Heckel to WIN the
job" doesn't hold anymore either.
I've heard good and bad things about the new Puchner bassoons, but have
yet to try one so I can't give an opinion about them, although I do like many
of the Puchner 8000 series which were made in the '70s.
Those three choices are what I would look at. Fox, Heckel and Puchner.
