Quintet of the Americas in Concert Performing Arts Center of the Little Theater York College CUNY 94-20 Guy R. Brewer Blvd. Jamaica, Queens, NY Friday, 2 October 2009 8:00 PM
The Quintet of the Americas will give a concert of music of the Americas on Friday, October 2 at 8:00 PM at the Performing Arts Center of the Little Theater, on the campus of York College CUNY, 94-20 Guy R. Brewer Blvd. in Jamaica, New York.
Concert repertoire will include The Soul, a special work by Native-American composer Louis Ballard, whose compositions combine Native-American melodic and rhythmic material (and occasionally Native-American instruments) with mainstream western compositional techniques. Other works on the program include Leonard Bernstein's Overture to Candide, Summer Music by Samuel Barber; Summertime by George Gershwin; music by African-American and Cuban-American composers James P. Johnson, William Grant Still, Carl MaultsBy and Paquito D'Rivera, covering early jazz to gospel and salsa styles. Forest Hills composer Gaudencio Thiago de Mello will be represented with a lovely lullaby about sleeping in a hammock! In recognition of the Quintet's origins in South America, the concert will include music from Colombia, Cuba, Peru and Brazil.

Members of Quintet of the Americas are Sato Moughalian, flute; Matt Sullivan, oboe; Nicholas Gallas, clarinet; Barbara Oldham, horn; and Maureen Strenge, bassoon. Founded in Bogota, Colombia in 1976, the Quintet has specialized in bringing music form Latin America to audiences in the United States since its arrival in New York in 1979. The group has enjoyed an international career that has taken them to concert halls throughout the Americas, the Caribbean, and Eastern Europe. Two time recipients of ASCAP-Chamber Music America Awards for Adventuresome Programming, the Quintet's repertoire represents works from composers with a wide-range of aesthetic viewpoints. They have recorded for CRI, Newport Classics, MMC and XLNT. Their latest CDs are Karel Husa: Recollections on New World and Dancing in Colombia and Sounds of Brazil on the MSR label. The Quintet has been a past recipient of Chamber Music America Commissioning Awards for commissions by David Chaitkin and Judith Sainte Croix, a three-year CMA Residency Award for work in Chicago and is a 2008-09 recipient of a CMA Residency Partnership Program Grant. The American Chamber Ensemble will present its Gala Annual Music Party on Sunday, October 4 at 3 PM at the New Academic Building (south campus - just west of the John Cranford Adams Playhouse) of Hofstra University in Hempstead, New York
Performers will include guest clarinetist Stanley Drucker (celebrating his 60 years with the New York Philharmonic), sopranos Karen Lehman and Tammy Hensrud and the ACE Clarinet Ensemble, who will join pianist Blanche Abram and clarinetist Naomi Drucker in a program of informal music making that will preview the upcoming season.
This concert is presented as part of Daniel Pearl World Music Days.

Boston Public Quartet is a group of professional musicians/educators committed equally to performing and teaching through a long-term residency at the underserved Chittick Elementary in Mattapan. Going on its third year in residence, the Quartet has created a new model for music education and performance, bringing together musicians, teachers and families through the shared intention of student success. Music becomes not just a mere lesson or concert, but a means of transformation and connection within the larger community. At the Chittick, the Quartet provides the school’s 300 students with their only access to music education through presentations, workshops, violin, viola and cello lessons and chamber music. A dedicated and persuasive champion of the music of our own time, Michael Norsworthy has given premieres of over 80 works in collaboration with composers Harrison Birtwistle, Elliott Carter, Chris Dench, Pozzi Escot, Brian Ferneyhough, Michael Finnissy, Lukas Foss, Hans Werner Henze, Magnus Lindberg, Ralph Shapey and Marc Anthony Turnage, among others.
As soloist, Michael Norsworthy has performed an extensive repertoire of concerti, ranging from Mozart to Ferneyhough, with the Aspen Contemporary Ensemble, Callithumpian Consort, NEC Contemporary Ensemble, Pottstown Symphony, Soria Chamber Players, Southern Illinois Symphony and Symphony Pro Musica, while audiences have heard his numerous recitals in New York , Boston, Cambridge, Chicago and St. Louis. Keith Lemmons, Professor of Clarinet
Keith Lemmons is the Professor of Clarinet and a Presidential Teaching Fellow at The University of New
Mexico in Albuquerque. He has performed at numerous International Clarinet Fests and Univ. of Oklahoma
Symposiums, the International Double Reed Society Conference, the Brazilian Clarinet Conference, with USIA
grants throughout Mexico and at universities throughout the U.S., Canada and Mexico. He performs with the
acclaimed faculty New Mexico Winds, the Taos Chamber Music Group,Serenata of Santa Fe and the Ay! Clarumba
Clarinet Quartet. He has also performed with the Santa Opera Orchestra, the New Mexico Symphony, Montana
Symphony, Chamber Orchestra of Albuquerque, Santa Fe Pro Musica, and Santa Fe Festival Ballet. He has twice
received the UNM Teacher of the Year and has former students teaching at the University and high school
levels, and playing in orchestras and prestigious service bands throughout the U.S. His teachers include
Elsa Ludewig-Verdehr, Larry Combs, Charlie Niedich, Thea King, and Robert Schott.
University of New Mexico Wind Symphony, Chamber Winds & Orchestra
Under the direction of Prof. EricRombach-Kendall, the UNM Wind Symphony has been selected to perform
for the Southwest Conference of the College Band Director's Association and the National Conference of the CBDNA.
Comprised of approximately 45 musicians, these ensembles perform the very best in wind repertoire, routinely feature
world class guest artist and commission and premiere new works. Most recently the Wind Symphony completed a
recording project with NY Philharmonic principal trumpeter Phil Smith and principal trombonist Joe Alessi.
The CD has recently been issued on the Summit label. The University of New Mexico Orchestra under the
direction of Dr. Jorge Perez Gomez presents an average of nine concerts per academic year, including major
symphonic repertoire, choral/orchestral works, and a major operatic production. A sampling of repertoire
that the orchestra has performed in past seasons: Brahms - Sym. No. 2, Wagner - Meistersinger Prelude,
Rimsky-Korsakov - Russian Easter Overture, Respighi - The Pines of Rome, Beethoven - Sym. No. 9, Mozart -
Requiem, Revueltas - Sensemaya, Mussorgsky - Pictures at an Exhibition, Night on Bald Mountain, Tchaikovsky
- Symphony No. 5, Shostakovich Sym. No. 9, Kodaly - Hary Janos and Orff - Carmina Burana. The Orff has been
recorded on CD and is available for purchase through the Music Department. The orchestra is also currently
involved in a long term project to record the orchestral music of Revueltas.
The University of New Mexico is an institution with a student enrollment around 28,000 students, the Music
department has 27 full-time faculty and 25 part-time faculty. It offers one of the finest music rehearsal,
practice and performance facilties in the U.S.

Undergraduate Clarinet Scholarships Available North Dakota State University Fargo, ND
The North Dakota State University Department of Music announces the availability of the Robert & Sheila Challey Music Scholarships for incoming students. Established in 2006, the NDSU Challey Scholarship Fund is committed to attracting and sustaining the finest music students in the region.
Specific awards include:
The Bill Euren Fellowship, named for the uncle of Robert Challey and Director of Bands at NDSU from 1948-1968. The Euren ("U-reen") Fellowship will be awarded to an incoming music major each year and will be equivalent to full tuition costs for four years.
The Myrtle Euren Challey Scholarships, named for the mother of Robert Challey. The amount of these awards will be at least one-quarter the amount of full tuition for four years.
The Patricia Yvonne Bizicki Scholarships, named for the mother of Sheila Challey. The amount of these awards will be at least one-quarter the amount of full tuition for four years.
The Robert & Sheila Challey Scholarships are additional awards of significant support, presented to both incoming and continuing majors in music.

Saddle River Valley Concert Band Upper Saddle River, NJ
The Saddle River Valley Concert Band has been in existence since 1972. We have about 15-20 concerts per year which include playing at town festivals, health care centers, graduations, tree lightings, concert series, or just about any place where people will listen to us. The band consists of about 40 volunteer
musicians. A few are music teachers and professional musicians but most of us are 9-5ers that do something else for our day job. We have an extensive music library of over 500 arrangements which include marches, show tunes, classical pieces and just about every concert band staple piece you can think of. We are an active band that enjoys playing music!
We welcome all ages and skill levels! We are seeking ALL woodwind, brass, and percussion players. But we have an extra special need at this time for clarinet,
flute, oboe, and bassoon. There are no try outs so just come in, introduce yourself to our conductor Harley Streiff and grab a library folder to read off.
If you're interested in becoming a member we'll make a folder for you in the weeks to follow. Rehearsals are every Wednesday evening from 8:00-10:00 at the Cavallini Middle School on West Saddle River RD in
Upper Saddle River, NJ. Near Route 17 and 287.

CLARINET CHOIR
It is my pleasure to invite you to attend regular rehearsals for a clarinet choir! The following are the offerings for the clarinet choir:
offering number 1: rehearsal sessions are from March 2009 to June 2009; and
offering number 2: rehearsal sessions are from September 2009 to June 2010.
Please respond to me if you are interested in attending rehearsals for any one of the above offerings. All skill levels are welcome to attend.
The long term objective is to continue rehearsals for the clarinet choir on a seasonal basis from September to June, with no rehearsals scheduled during July and August.
THE CONDUCTOR
The conductor will be Helen Russell; she is: a member of the clarinet faculty at the Royal Conservatory of Music (Toronto & Mississauga), and is also a senior Examiner for woodwinds/brass/percussion students. She has conducted clarinet choirs at the RCM, the Claude Watson School for the Arts and the Colorado Bands Symposium. Further below is Helen’s bio for your review.

There are approximately 265 scores for clarinet choir, ranging from classical to modern music. Further below is a partial summary of the scores.
REGULAR SEASON REHEARSALS
The cost is $100 per person for the regular season including 20 rehearsals from September 2009 through to June 2010; this cost is all inclusive (sheet music, etc). Bring your clarinet, music stand and reeds.
The cost is: $100 for 20 rehearsals. The smiles on your faces: priceless!
The rehearsals are to be held twice a month from September to June (no rehearsals scheduled for July and August).
SPRING 2009 REHEARSALS
Helen will provide 8 rehearsals for the Spring Season from March 2009 to June 2009; The cost for the 8 rehearsals for the Spring season 2009 is $40 per person, all inclusive.
Please see the schedule below for exact dates and times for the Spring 2009 rehearsals. All rehearsals are booked for Sundays from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm.

I invite you to attend the Spring 2009 rehearsals; please email your details to me if you are interested in attending, so that we can reserve your chair and ensure that there will be sheet music available for you.
If you are interested in proceeding and attending the remaining rehearsals during Spring 2009, please bring your payment of $40; your payment is requested as a cheque made payable to HELEN RUSSELL for the amount of $40. Receipts will be issued upon payment at the first rehearsal.
There is no obligation on your part to return for future rehearsals at the end of the first rehearsal.

HELEN RUSSELL’s BIO:
Helen holds:
(i) an Associateship in Clarinet Performance from the Royal College of Music in London, England,
(ii) a Master of Music in Clarinet Performance from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music, and
(iii) a Bachelor of Music from the University of Western Ontario.
Helen is currently:
(i) a member of the Clarinet faculty at the Royal Conservatory of Music (RCM) in Toronto and at the RCM in Mississauga;
(ii) a Senior Woodwinds/Brass/Percussion Examiner;
(iii) a mentor to examiners-in-training; and
(iv) the conductor of the RCM clarinet ensemble, which is tentatively scheduled to run in the Fall of 2009.
Helen has:
conducted clarinet choirs at the RCM, the Claude Watson School for the Arts, and the Colorado Bands Symposium;
performed extensively both as a clarinet soloist and a chamber musician;
appeared with the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra, the Cincinnati Percussion Ensemble, the Colorado Opera, the Greeley Philharmonic, the Colorado; Symphony Orchestra, Orchestra London and the Windsor Symphony Orchestra;
performed at the Norfolk Chamber Music Festival, the Sandpoint Music Festival, the Brott Music Festival, The Schweitzer Institute and the National Repertory Orchestra;
recorded with the Cincinnati Wind Symphony, the Cincinnati Contemporary Ensemble and the Windsor Symphony Orchestra; and
performed as a featured soloist with: the Kitchener-Waterloo Chamber Orchestra; the Cincinnati Concert Orchestra; and the Cincinnati Contemporary Ensemble.

Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp Blue Lake, Michigan
Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp is seeking strong college level clarinetists students to serve as counselors for the summer, and openings are still available.
Staff positions at Blue Lake give college students great experience as a mentor and leader with Jr High and High School age students. Staff members also have a wide range of performance opportunities as a part of their work assignments. Opportunities to teach sectional classes to our younger students are available for more advanced applicants. The date commitment runs from June 22nd -August 23rd and salaries range from $1,400 - $2,300 (plus room and board) based on experience. We could really use your recommendations!

...performing with the Festival Orchestra and/or Festival Band, recitals, staff solo competition, chamber ensembles, private lessons with faculty, teaching sectionals & technique classes with junior campers, and gaining valuable experience in leadership and working with youth.
Dates, Salary, and Duties:
... June 22 - August 23, salary $1,400 up to $2,300 (based on experience) plus room, board, and extensive performing & educational opportunities. Staff duties include living with and supervising 10 - 12 campers, assisting with recreational and social activities, work 15 - 20 hours a week at a specific assignment (performing ensembles for musicians), and consistently acting on campers' needs.
A Summer Full of Experience!
Instrumentalists have the opportunity to perform with faculty in the Blue Lake Festival Orchestra and/or Festival Band, and chamber ensembles as part of their work assignment. A staff solo competition offers performers an opportunity to solo with the Festival Orchestra as part of Blue Lake's Season Finale. Teaching positions with junior campers are also available for those who qualify. Placement based on audition/application.

Join the Middletown Symphonic Band Middletown, CT
The Middletown Symphonic Band of Middletown, CT, USA has been providing Connecticut residents and visitors with an excellent variety of music since 1979. Committed to the preservation of live concert band music, the band was established to give both professional and amateur musicians an opportunity to practice and perform together.
The band has an extensive repertoire: classical and semi-classical pieces, Broadway, jazz, marches, holiday favorites and traditional concert band music. We perform at summer park concerts, town fairs, celebrations, and other festive occasions. Our annual winter holiday and Labor Day concerts are perennial favorites with our loyal Middletown audience.

New York University Music Department Clarinet Openings New York, New York
The New York University Music Department is announcing that there will be a number of
openings available this fall to clarinetists seeking performance and music education
degrees, in both the undergraduate and graduate schools. NYU's illustrious faculty
includes Dr. Esther Lamneck, head of the department, Stanley Drucker, David Krakauer,
Pascual Martinez Forteza, Larry Guy, and Dennis Smylie. NYU is an outstanding school
musically and academically, and it is located in the heart of Greenwich Village in New York
City. Performance opportunities are vast and varied, and the dedicated faculty members
offer individualized attention. The application deadline is in January, so interested players
are urged to search the NYU web site for further information. Players are also invited to

The Blue Lake International Program is a division of Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp that offers students an opportunity to travel throughout Western Europe while performing in an advanced ensemble. Western Carolina University School of Music Graduate Assistantships School of Music Coulter Building Cullowhee, NC
Graduate Assistantships in several areas including clarinet are available for the
coming year. These are renewable for two years.
The stipend is $7000 annually. Limited out-of-state waivers are also available.
The School of Music offers masters and undergraduate degrees in Performance, Music
Education, Commercial and Electronic Music, and Music Theatre. The School is
accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music, and its faculty and
students perform over seventy concerts per semester.

My band needs more clarinets Detroit, MI area
This is addressed to any reasonably
decent clarinet players in the area of southeastern Oakland County,
Michigan, who might want to participate in an adult concert band. We have
a small clarinet section that really gets overpowered by the brass, and
